Blackpool Day Trip

We decided to head over to Blackpool for the day. It is a place that I have been many times, famous for its beach, tower, light and fish & Chips. It was Jinny’s first time going there and thankfully the weather was great!

Central Pier

The first place we went to was Central Pier which is one of Blackpool’s three piers which opened in 1868.

Location:

Inside the pier there is multiple arcades where you can play on a variety of machines. We choose to try out the Coin Penny Pushers. Essentially you put in 2p coins into the sides of the machine to try to push off what is on the edge. You will either get more 2p coins to use again or other small prizes they have inside. It is a super fun way to spend a few pounds.

We also tried our hand at the shooting game they had there. It was all electronic, so when you lined up the gun with the target and pulled the trigger it would cause a mechanical animation to start. Kind of quirky and fun, but just one game was definitely enough!

Shockingly we were able to win enough prize tickets while in the arcade to get a toy glider. I used to love these things when I was younger! Very popular British toy for kids.

Blackpool Tower

Next was the famous Blackpool Tower. They are currently celebrating 125 years of history, and when it was originally built it was dubbed the ‘Wonderland of the World’. It was the brainchild of Sir John Bickerstaffe, a former Mayor of Blackpool who was inspired by visiting The Eiffel Tower and passionate about the Lancashire resort.

Location

Inside there is a circus, ballroom, dungeon & mini-golf. It is pretty intense! We decided to just enjoy the views from outside and on the 4th floor of the tower which you can access for free, and where there is also a coffee shop too.

Comedy Carpet

Just outside of Blackpool Tower is the Comedy Carpet. It is the work of more than 1,000 comedians and comedy writers. There are jokes, songs and catchphrases dating from the early days of variety to the present. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area. Apparently in total it is 2,200m2 work of art and contains over 160,000 granite letters embedded into concrete.

Location:

Blackpool Pleasure Beach

We were planning to explore the Blackpool Pleasure Beach which is an amusement park. I have been there a lot when I was living in the UK. It has a bunch of rides for both adults and children. Though there has also been a number of injuries and death at the park.

Location:

Before it was free to go and have wander around, then pay for any ride you wanted to go on. Not the case anymore, as to go into the park now you have to pay. As we only had a few hours left we decided to enjoy a different kind of pleasure, beer!

Pub Time

We headed to a pub not too far from the Pleasure Beach called The Dutton Arms.

Location:

Especially in tourist locations, food and drink can be a bit overpriced. Thankfully The Dutton Arms is a pretty local places so beer wasn’t too expensive. They also had a pool table in the back which you could play for a couple of pounds after putting down a deposit for the cues. So we spent a while there before moving on to enjoy some fish & chips!

Fish & Chips

Not too far we were able to find a fish & chip restaurant with a good review. It is called Bentley’s Fish & Chip Shop.

Location:

They are a family run fish and chip shop, selling quality produce. In 2019 they won the Good food award, and even have gluten free fish and chips too. They sell the fish in 3 sizes, we each got medium which was perfectly filling with chips. It was deliciously and we highly recommend it!

We were so hungry that we ate everything without taking a picture or video! But you can see a review of the restaurants as well as lots of pictures of their food here:

Even though I had been to Blackpool many times, it was great to experience it with Jinny. We had a great day and we would highly recommend a trip to everyone who has the opportunity.
